We’ve got a Wii!

Last week Christina called me at work to let me know she’d spent $250 on her lunch break. I didn’t know what she could have possibly purchased since we just had Christmas and there wasn’t really anything we needed. But there was something I’d wanted! She had stumbled upon a shipment of Nintendo Wii’s being stocked at Target and had quickly grabbed one before the word got out.
She had tried to no avail to find me a Wii before Christmas so she could surprise me but this was just as good. If she had actually been able to find it and wrap it and put it under the tree, I would’ve easily spotted the box and ruined any surprise.
The first night it took close to two hours to get the darn thing set up. Unboxing and plugging everything wasn’t too difficult (finding space for it in the A/V rack was a little fun) but the two separate system updates too forever. I think it may have been our Internet being slow and not Nintendo’s fault, but one update took about half an hour and the other at least 45 minutes. It kind of ruined that initial joy of turning a brand new console on and starting it up and playing some games. (Yes I could’ve skipped the updates but I had no idea they’d take so long when I started them.)
We eventually got the Wii up and running and played some Wii Sports. The very first thing Christina says when she sees the game’s graphics was, “Why is it so ugly?” The graphics are most definitely a big step down from the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and Wii Sports is uglier than pretty much all Xbox and PS2 games as well. Hopefully the impossible to find component cables will improve things a bit if Nintendo ever decides to make any actually useful accessories available in stores.
The first mini-game we tried was tennis and it was a great time. Christina just thought my dancing around and waving around the Wii-mote was hilarious. It actually looked fun enough for her to want to play too. We played some more tennis and bowled a few rounds and had a really good time. The graphics suck, the console and accessories are too expensive, and we only have one Wii-mote, but if you can make Christina actually play video games you’re doing a good job.

Nunchuck is a funny word. I used to play the heck out of Sonic and Streetfighter. So I used to play!!

i played the Wii at my friend’s house over new year’s eve. make sure to CLEAR EVERYTHING out of the way!!! he’s already broken a drinking glass that was on the coffee table in front of him. and then his brother knocked the second remote against the same table, and we thought that was a goner (after a few minutes, the gyro inside got centered again).
joe and i want to buy a Wii also, but we both agreed that it looks best when you have a giganto HD plasma. we’ll be saving up our money for a while. oh, y’all need to buy the monkey ball something something game. there are some really neat mini games in it that are fun.

Yeah I already busted a Christmas ornament. Just blew right through it with my hand during my follow through in Wii Tennis.
By the way… the Wii might actually look better without a HDTV. I know you’ve played it but it’s definitely not a graphical powerhouse. Seems to me the small imperfections are magnified.

good point. maybe the tv doesn’t have to be in high def, but we want to get a bigger screen just so when you’re playing two-player, you can actually see what’s going on.
